WASILLA CARD PROJECT MAKES CARDS FOR SOLDIERS

posted Feb 1, 2011 2:51 PM by Molly Johnson
A new group, the Wasilla Card Project, will meet on Saturday, February 5 and monthly thereafter to create handcrafted greeting cards to supply to service members serving overseas. The Wasilla Card Project will supply the cards to soldiers on active duty so that soliders will have unique cards on hand to send home for special occasions -- birthdays, anniversaries and other holidays.
The group will meet at St. Davidʼs Episcopal Church, Mile 2.2 Wasilla-Fishhook Road, Wasilla on Saturday, Feb. 5 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m..

No special skills are required. Participants may bring their own supplies to create cards, or bring double-sided tape and scissors.    Bring a snack or something to share with the group.

Finished card packets will be sent to Afghanistan and to bases the group has connections with for distribution by soliders there. The group will focus primarily on Easter cards and birthday cards during the February card-making session.

“My son has served two tours of duty and my nephew is soon to be deployed” ” explained Deb Waisanen, a church vestry member who is organizing the group at St. Davidʼs. “Deployments are hard on everyone, of course. A brief, handwritten note in a card can mean so much to family members back home,” Waisanen added.

“Weʼre providing these beautiful cards not only to help those on active duty but also to benefit their families so far away,” she said. “So many family members in the area want to help support our military and their families and this is something fun and easy that we can do.”

Future card-making sessions will be held on March 12, April 2 and May 14.
